World Lung Foundation | The Tobacco Atlas, 5th Edition

The American Cancer Society and World Lung Foundation partner on this global compendium of data documenting the impact of tobacco on the world. For the 4th and 5th Editions, we've designed the book as a complete narrative, and as individual data sets, for sharing digitally to journalists and policy-makers worldwide.
“…this edition of the Atlas covers the broad spectrum of non-communicable diseases and important issues that influence them, especially gender, development, and the environment.”
Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General, World Health Organization
Three years after the publication of  The Tobacco Atlas, Fourth Edition, The American Cancer Society and World Lung Foundation enlisted us again to design the Fifth Edition. The Tobacco Atlas, Fifth Edition pushes over ten years of research one step further by inviting colleagues tackling closely-related challenges—including protecting the environment, promoting equality, engendering development and fighting non-communicable diseases (NCDs)—to explore common interests, ideas, and strategies to find far-reaching solutions.

The print edition is slimmed down in favor of making more resources available online, but the contents of this Atlas are no less robust. The thirty-two chapters are bursting with the most recent and comprehensive data available in tobacco research. Twenty-nine world choropleth-coded maps, over 100 graphic insets, and 55 soundbites from both allies and adversaries present a comprehensive picture of both problems and solutions. Photographic collages make the data more human and draw connections between products, users, and the relentless tobacco industry. All graphics were designed with portability in mind. See the companion website at tobaccoatlas.org.

“With this fifth edition of The Tobacco Atlas we hope to reach many more people around the globe, reinforcing a movement that is making great strides but that cannot let down its guard for even a second. The fate of the earth, a world that should be free of tobacco industry exploitation, depends on it.”
John R. Sefrin, CEO, The American Cancer Society and Peter Baldini, CEO, World Lung Foundation
“Words are just words, and numbers are just numbers.
But with outstanding design, the words and numbers tell a story and open the mind.”

Dr. Michael Eriksen, lead author of The Tobacco Atlas, Fourth Edition
